The story begins with Clay Jensen receiving a package of tapes with recordings from Hannah Baker, a girl her recently killed herself. The tapes tell her story, and what lead to her death. It is from Clay’s point of view, as he listens to the tapes on an old Walkman and follows a map she provided him with key points of her life.

Throughout the story, Hannah’s eerie retelling of her life leaves you haunted and unsure of what will come next. Hannah’s life is a rollercoaster that keeps the reader anxious and almost hesitant to continue out of fear of what will happen next.
