This year the Class of 2014 sponsored the Second Annual North Point Idol Competition and Fundraiser. The competition stared with 44 auditions and then came down to 15 students with varying musical styles and sounds. The competition was judged by Mrs. Helming, the North Point choir director; Mr. Vandyke, the North Point band and orchestra director; and special guest judge Mrs. Shani Prewitt, the vocalist of the US Air Force Band Max Impact.
The competition featured five freshmen: Alicia Drayton, NiYa Fleming, Jasmine Carter, D’Auna Coley, and Amanda Crehan. The song choices varied from oldies, but goodies to current top pop hits. Sophomore, Ari Armowitz was a crowd pleaser with his rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Grenade”.
The competition was a tight one. Annaya Liverpool (’13) dominated the stage and took home the Crowd Favorite Award as well as first place. Liverpool sang “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. “It was stunning, beautiful, and a great job,” commented Helming.
In second place was Valen Gordon (’12) who sang the popular hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye. “Overall, just great,” said Vandyke, “you didn’t bore.” Prewitt added, “Just flawless.” Gordon was surprised with winning second place. “I just wanted to go out and have fun, it is senior year, you have to go big or go home. I’m just glad the judges liked me,” added Gordon.
Third place went to Brad Sharper (’12) who entertained and amused the crowd with “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. Sharper sang to the judges then came out into the audience and serenaded Kyle Sackett (’12). “It was fun, I didn’t expect it at all,” commented Sackett. The judges were highly enthused with his performance. “You’re like a modern day Frank Sinatra,” commented Prewitt.
The other contestants of the competition were Devrin Boyd (’12), Dakota Gray (’14), Maddison Stinson (’12), Nateia Templeton (’13), Chris Betton (’12), and Hannah Roger (’12). The fundraiser raised over $3,000 for the sophomore class. “It was a great success,” said Tony Teleky (’14), Class President.
