Beyoncé’s Surprise “Formation” Video
Beyoncé surprised her fans on February 6, 2016 by releasing her newest single, “Formation.” This is such a surprise because none of her fans knew that this song was being released. This song explains how she doesn’t care about her “haters,” and that people need to stop judging her. Many people were upset with her because of the racial slurs and stereotypes mentioned in the song. In one part of the song, she talks about how she has “hot sauce in her bag” and how she likes her baby just the way she is with “baby hair and afros.” There is a lot of controversy about the song and what the “undertone” of the song is. According to The Washington Post, the Anti-Beyoncé Protest Rally claims “Beyoncé is responsible for police brutality, because her lyrics are causing people to act out. Her Super Bowl performance was unacceptable,” as well as her use of the “N- word”
Regardless of the way people are talking about her poorly, there are some people who are supporting her, and actually like her song. Karis Green (’18) states, “I thought Beyoncé’s video was really creative. I liked the way the lyrics were conveyed, and the song is just great.” Lauryn Reid (’18) expresses, “I haven’t heard the song in its entirety, but from what I heard on the Super Bowl it sounds like a good song.” Zianna Norman (’18) mentions, “I thought this was a really good video.” Edine Gebreyesus (’19) adds, “I love it! This is such a great song! I listen to it a lot, and it’s one of my favorite songs.”
Beyoncé is a vocal artist. For some people she is a goddess, and to others, she is irrelevant. There are many ideas, rumors, and controversies about Beyoncé and her decision to release this song. At the end of the day, she is human just like everyone else, and whatever she wants to do, she will make it happen. It’s up to the public to oppose her views, or continue to support her in all of her decisions.
