2018 Grammy Preview
Coming up on January 28th, the 60th annual Grammy Awards will be held. It will be a star studded night filled with many of 2017’s most popular artists.
Many artists will be making their first appearances, such as Cardi b, Lil Uzi Vert and Tyler The Creator. For artists like Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z, this year’s awards will be only one of many others award nominations. This year, the focus with a lot people will be the award for Best Rap Album. The nominees for that are DAMN by Kendrick Lamar, 4:44 by Jay-z, Culture by Migos, Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator and Laila’s Wisdom by Rhapsod. “I think Kendrick Lamar will win Best Rap Album because of his unique style and rhythm” predicted sophomore Tennyson Thompson. With last year’s winner being Coloring Book by Chance the Rapper, people are excited to see who will be bringing the trophy home this year.
Of course, without each individual song, there would be no rap albums. There is always that one song that just sticks out on an album, the song that catches your attention so quickly there is absolutely no way you can hit that skip button. These are the songs you always hear on the radio, at parties, and at dances. There were so many songs like that this year, narrowing them down to just five must have taken a lifetime. But the people who choose the awards did just that, as this year’s nominees for Best Rap Song are “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B, “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar, “The Story Of O.J” by Jay-Z, “Sassy” by Rhapsody and “Chase Me” by Danger Mouse. These songs have taken the hip-hop world by storm, so it is sure to be a tight race.
This year could not only be legendary, but it could also be historical. In the category of Record of the Year, Kendrick Lamar could become the first rapper to win the award. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito featuring Justin Bieber could become only the second foreign language song and first Spanish song to win the award. Many new artists will also be making an appearance. SZA’s breakout album Ctrl has helped her become a top female nominee in multiple categories. She has been nominated for five awards. “I think SZA will win Best New Artist because her album came out, everyone loved it. Her songs were playing everywhere all the time” said junior Melanie Battle. Bruno Mars “24k Magic” has been nominated for Record of the Year. Its his fifth nomination in that category since 2010. That’s more than any other artist this decade. Mars has also been nominated for Best R&B Album. Four years ago, his album Unorthodox Jukebox won Best Pop Vocal Album. This year, he may become the first artist to win in both categories.
With so many stars going head to head at the awards show, January 28th is sure to be a great night in music.
