Two rising stars, one complicated history. Fans can’t stop debating who’s coming out on top though. Let’s be honest, at this point we’ve heard about the situation between Tate McRae and The Kid Laroi and their breakup, but let’s go back, for those who need a reminder. Tate Rosner McRae or Tate McRae is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer who first became well-known as the first Canadian finalist on So You Think You Can Dance in 2016. She later found viral success with her 2017 debut single, “One Day,” which was certified Gold by the RIAA. The Kid Laroi, or Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard, is an Australian singer, rapper, and songwriter. Born in Sydney in 2003 to an indigenous Australian mother and a French father, his name is derived from the Kamilaroi, his mother’s ethnic group.
In early January of 2024, these two stars were dating with their relationship being confirmed by February 2024 when they were spotted holding hands, and they appeared together at several events in 2024 and 2025, though a split seemed to occur around July 2025. As of now, both artists have released tracks and singles, talking about the breakup, but the question is, whose is better? And what truly happened between these two stars?
On September 6th, 2025, The Kid Laroi released his track, “A COLD PLAY,” in which he talks about the relationship from his point of view. Within the lyrics, he mentions the line, “Fix you.” As a reporter, I have listened to his track and in my opinion, from what I have heard and got from it, is that he wants to blame Tate but to him, he can’t. Also, the title of the track can possibly go onto the idea of the situation earlier in 2025 where there was a cheating scandal at a Coldplay concert.
On September 26th, 2025, Tate McRae released a singled titled, “TIT FOR TAT.” Within her track, she talks about how she loved him, but now with how he’s acting, (possibly mentioning or alluding to A COLD PLAY), she won’t. Within the lyrics of TIT FOR TAT, she sings, “Let’s go song for song let’s go back to back. Let’s go tit for tat, boy, you asked for that.” These lyrics show that she’s directly challenging her ex to a musical back and forth. Going back to how he started it, Tate McRae’s “TIT FOR TAT” is a direct retaliation to her ex-boyfriend, The Kid LAROI’s song “A COLD PLAY,” addressing the breakup and the narrative surrounding it. The song’s deeper meaning lies in McRae’s assertion of her perspective, her decision to match her ex’s actions, and her message that she will not be played. The title itself, “TIT FOR TAT,” refers to retaliating with an equivalent action, which in this case is releasing a song in response to her ex’s song. On top of that, in ‘A Cold Play’, The Kid Laroi sings: Fix you, fix you, fix you, wish I could. Meanwhile, Tate sings: Fix your ***** self, kiss my *** for that in ‘Tit For Tat.’
In my opinion, as of now, Tate McRae is winning this feud but it’s still very fresh and once more information is revealed, then we can make our decision.
