The 2020 Global Coronavirus Outbreak
As 2020 just began only a few months ago, we now have entered a state where the entire world is concerned about another outbreak. The coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China and has spread to countries such as the United States, Italy, and more. This has caused travelers and tourists to stop flying and try to return to their homes. The death toll has recently hit over 3,000 world-wide, there are thousands of reported cases from around the world, and it’s leaving many people worrying for the future.
Maryland is no exception to the coronavirus. There are currently 34,061 confirmed cases and well over 1,600 deaths. Schools in Maryland, DC and Virginia have announced that they will not be opening back up this school year after having to close the doors on March 13th. School districts are currently working to implement distance learning for students amid this crises.
With more cases occurring around the country and throughout the world, and with the death toll on the rise, people can’t help but to worry. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan had stated that “While we are hoping for the best, we are also actively planning for the worst,” as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread.
It’s important to understand that the coronavirus symptoms can mimic the one’s of the flu or common cold as the virus affects the upper respiratory system. Schools and many more public organizations caution people to stay calm but also to stick to the basics of washing hands, covering mouths when coughing/sneezing, and self-quarantine at home if sick. There is no way that people can predict the outcome of the coronavirus; we can only do our best to try and prevent the worst situation from occurring. There are travel sanctions set up in order to prevent people from traveling in or out of country where the COVID-19 outbreak is heavily spreading. Many health organizations are working to prevent the outbreak from becoming massive, but it’s still important to understand how to prepare for the worst possible outcome.
