Most students do not associate quizzes as being fun, but when the NEST bell rings at eleven o’clock on Mondays and Fridays, students gather in room 2308 and 2309 respectively for the “Its Academic!” club to take a different kind of quiz. “It’s Academic” is a team of students who compete in trivia competitions against other area schools at both the local level, at a county competition, and the regional level, at the NBC Channel 4 Television program of the same name. Additionally, the “It’s Academic” team competes in the SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl competition.
The types of trivia include anything from standard school subjects such as English, Science, and history as well as current events and pop culture trivia. At normal meetings, the students typically divide into teams and play actual rounds as a competition. However, they also like to have fun during practices and often find random trivia to quiz the group as a whole.
The advisors of the club, Ms. Stewart and Ms. DeVeny, show equal enthusiasm for the club and encourage other students to join. Many students join for the added benefits of the club. “Beyond the fun of getting together every week to practice, this is great experience to place on college and job applications and resumes,” says Ms. DeVeny “The competitions are also really fun and help the students become more confident in their own abilities.”
“What I like about It’s Academic is that it gives me a chance to test my general knowledge on the world, which is fun” commented Joel Rogers (‘15). The ability to travel to non local competitions and the chance of being on TV is also a popular bonus among the club participants.
“I really love being the co-advisor for ‘It’s Academic’. We have so much fun,” Ms. DeVeny concluded.
Look out for North Point on televised episodes of “It’s Academic” Saturday mornings on NBC4.
