“You’re going to Hollywood!” Those infamous words were in mind when this year’s North Point Idol contestants were informed of their chance to be in the spotlight. On May 17, for one night only, students were given a chance to experience “fame” just like those on the actual reality show American Idol.
Just like American Idol, the competition starts off with students auditioning their musical talents. Then the field is narrowed down as the contestants give their all to win the title of 2013’s North Point Idol. The competition is judged by three adults with musical backgrounds to crown the winner of this year’s competition. Famous quotes from American Idol are recited, to get the crowd into the spirit as if they were in the actual audience of the television show.
North Point Idol first debuted in 2011. Since then many students have auditioned for a shot of being one of the contenders. North Point Idol is a mere friendly competition. Some of the participants are not even in it for the win. For some it is a confidence booster to get over their shyness. For others it is just a way to end their senior year with a bang and have memories they will never forget.
This year the event was hosted by Tony Teleky (’14) and Kelia McRae (’14) as North Point Idol’s take on Ryan Seacrest. The competition featured Alyssa Gonnella (’15), Angela Wilder (’13), Ari Amowitz (’14), Siarah Beall (’13), Aaron Harper(‘13), Niya Fleming(’15), Donna Escorpeso ( ’14), Tasia Smith(’14), Monica Garza(’14), Keyons Djossuo(’14), Aniya Brown(’15), Amanda Crehan(’15), Indeah Woods(’13) and Kota Gray(’13). This year’s performers also included last year’s winner Annaya Liverpool (’14) singing Whenever You Can by Mariah Carey. A lot of old favorites like I Remember by Keyshia Cole, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, and Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 were sung by the contenders. Even some new hits like Titanium by David Guetta ft. Sia and Next To Me by Emili Sande were featured at this year’s North Point Idol.
After each performer sang their song, it was followed by the fan favorite vote by the audience and the final results and awards that are given to the winners at the end of the night. The night’s “fan favorite” award went to Gray (’13). This year’s 3rd place winner was Escorpeso (’14), and 2nd place winner was Crehan (’15). The title of 2013’s North Point Idol went to Garza (’14) who won the judges over with her empowering voice. After a great night of performances it leaves some wondering: who will be the next North Point Idol?
